Operating under the auspices of the United Nations, its purpose is to investigate and combat paranormal and extraterrestrial threats to the Earth.
Although it operates under the authority of the United Nations, its members are seconded from the host country's military and are still bound to obey that chain of command.

It was founded in 1945 by 51 states, replacing The League of Nations.
Its first formal use was in the January 1, 1942 Declaration by the United Nations, which committed the Allies to the principles of the Atlantic Charter and pledged them not to seek a separate peace with the Axis powers.

He worked for UNIT (United Nations Intelligence Taskforce), an international organisation that defends the Earth from alien threats.
In 1986, he led a UNIT team to Antarctica to clear up the mess left in the wake of the Cybermen's failed attempt to drain Earth of its energy (The Tenth Planet).

This is the Doctor Who story supposed to plug the gap explaining how Mike Yates of UNIT (United Nations Intelligence Taskforce) changed from the devoted hero to the man who turned the gun on the Doctor.
I sat down with this book hoping to have a good Doctor Who story, but was rather disappointed to find that it is more reminiscent for me to a horror movie than Dr Who, especially with the crowds of people changing into Xantari and liberal helpings of gory ends at the hands of the aforementioned.
It might have worked if it was more of an intelligent story or more an adventure, but was too dependant on horror and references to past Doctor Who.

Review: Dr. Liz Shaw is uprooted from her research at Cambridge to serve as the scientific advisor for the recently formed United Nations Intelligence Taskforce, headed by Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart.
There's also a vaguely sinister air about U.N.I.T. in the early scenes where it appears that Liz is being coerced into working for the Brigadier, and later when one of U.N.I.T.'s soldiers grills local poacher Seeley for the whereabouts of one of the artificial meteors.
An example: when the Silurians abduct the Doctor from the lab where he is working on an antidote to a plague the Silurians have released to eradicate humankind, Liz continues working on the cure until she finds the formula herself.
