Chandrika Kumaratunga - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
She currently heads the United People's Freedom Alliance which is an electoral coalition in which the SLFP is the largest party.
Chandrika herself was elected Prime Minister of a People's Alliance government on August 19, 1994 and President in the presidential elections held shortly thereafter in November, an election which ended 17 years of UNP rule.
However, President Kumaratunga's People's Alliance party (PA) and the leftist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna or JVP (People's Liberation Front) formed the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) in January 2004.

As had been predicted by pollsters, the United Peoples’ Freedom Alliance led by the president, Ms Chandrika Kumaratunga, has emerged as the single largest force in parliament, with 105 seats in the 225-member parliament.
The UPFA is eight seats short of a majority and will have to depend on minor Tamil and Muslim parties, which have their own narrow agenda for survival.
Moreover, the UPFA is an alliance between Ms Kumaratunga’s Sri Lanka Freedom Party and the hardline Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, which hardly inspires confidence.

The UPFA also reminds that in the previous elections proper covering of the polling booth was not made and have requested to rectify this at the forth coming elections for minimum disruption.
The letter also suggests that since the UPFA Presidential candidate Mr Mahinda Rajapakse didn’t have the opportunity to meet the civilians it is reasonable to allow him to explain his principles to the voters at a point close to the cluster polling centres.

A balance of power system functions most effectively when alliances are fluid, when they are easily formed or broken on the basis of expediency, regardless of values, religion, history, or form of government.
There are further nuances to the theory: for instance, the sources of power transition vary in their volitility, population change being the least volatile and political capacity (defined as the ability of the government to control resources internal to the country) the most volatile.
The unit of analysis is the world-system rather than a state or society, with particular emphases on the long-term history and totality of the system.
