The URC is the result of a union between the Presbyterian Church of England and the Congregational Church in England and Wales in 1972 and subsequent unions with the Re-formed Association of Churches of Christ in 1981 and the Congregational Union of Scotland in 2000.
The URC is a trinitarian church with strong historical roots in the Presbyterian (Reformed and Calvinist) and Congregational traditions.
Each congregation (local church) within the URC is governed by a church meeting consisting of all the members, with the counsel of the (elected) elders' meeting (similar to the Scottish Kirk's session).

The United Reformed Churches in North America is a new federation of churches formed on October 1, 1996, at a synod meeting held in Lynwood, Illinois, succeeding an organization known as the Fellowship of Uniting Reformed Churches in North America which had been formed in 1995.
This was adopted by the Uniting Churches on November 16,1995.
Geoff Donnan, of the Reformed Presbyterian Church General Assembly, was also present The synod also mandated two member councils to "pursue membership in the International Conference of Reformed Churches." appointed a committee for correspondence and contact with other churches, and adopted and sent a letter to the Interclassical Conference meeting held at South Holland.

 Christ Reformed Church: Church Order
A man who is a member of a church of the federation and who aspires to the ministry must evidence genuine godliness to his Consistory, which shall assume supervision of all aspects of his training, including his licensure to exhort, and assure that he receives a thoroughly reformed theological education.
Among churches belonging to the federation, three assemblies shall be recognized, the Consistory, the classis and the synod.
Churches are encouraged to pursue ecumenical relations with Reformed congregations outside of the federation, which manifest the marks of the true church and demonstrate faithful allegiance to Scripture as summarized in the Three Forms of Unity.

The formation of the United Reformed Churches in North America in the mid 1990’s increased the feasibility of starting a new Christian school for families who belonged to these and other churches seeking to remain faithful to the historic Reformed faith.
After many informal and unrecorded meetings, a group of concerned parents in these churches sent a letter to 22 area church councils and sessions explaining their interest in a new school and inviting each church to send a representative to an exploratory meeting on February 3, 1998.
