United Space Alliance executives expect to hit $2.5 billion in annual sales by 2002, thanks to additions to a mammoth space shuttle operations contract awarded to the joint venture company two and a half years ago.
In June, NASA and the United Space Alliance are cosponsoring a two-day national conference in League City, Texas, to identify emerging technologies and concepts for next-generation improvements to the shuttles.
United Space Alliance executives hope to parlay the company's shuttle work into other government space business, such as operating the International Space Station and the planned crew return vehicle that would be used to ferry astronauts back to Earth in an emergency.

NASA penalized the contractor that maintains and operates the space shuttle fleet $45.2 million for its role in the shuttle Columbia accident, according to a letter NASA released Thursday.
The United Space Alliance, a partnership of Boeing and Lockheed Martin, had to forfeit the money even though NASA said the contractor did nothing specific to cause the accident.
United Space Alliance was born out of NASA's desire in the 1990s to consolidate 86 contracts with private companies working on the shuttle.

In 1996, NASA turned over space shuttle flight operations to the United Space Alliance, a private firm owned by Boeing Co. and Lockheed Martin Corp. Under pressure from the Clinton administration and Congress to cut costs, NASA had gradually shifted many responsibilities to the private sector.
United Space is now considered the prime contractor for the space shuttle program and manages about a third of the program's budget.

USA was told by a Justice Department lawyer that the lawsuit had been sent Tuesday night to the U.S. District Courthouse in Los Angeles for processing.
Rockwell in April 1996 assigned the contract to manage NASA's space shuttle fleet to United Space Alliance, a company formed in a partnership between Boeing and Lockheed Martin.
"We believe USA is being named as a defendant as a result of some confusion over corporate identities stemming from the assignment of (shuttle operations) to USA," said Jeff Carr, a spokesman for USA in Houston.
