What is now the United States Soccer Federation was originally the US Football Association, formed in 1913 by the merger of the American Football Association and the American Amateur Football Association and became one of the earliest member organizations of FIFA.

The USL is the parent organization for the men's lower division leagues of US Soccer USL First Division (second division), USL Second Division (third division), and Premier Development League (PDL) (fourth division).
Before the beginning the 1990/91 indoor season the league again changed its name to the Sunbelt Independent Soccer League, and again prior to the beginning of the 1991/92 indoor season the league changed its name to the United States Interregional Soccer League, better known as the USISL.
In 1995, after briefly renaming themselves the United States International Soccer League, the league changed its name to the United Systems of Independent Soccer Leagues and formally established an amateur Premier League and a professional Pro League.

The National Cup Competition is the oldest and most prestigious soccer tournament in the United States for any person who is a member of a team playing in a league of four or more teams affiliated with the United States Soccer Federation and the United States Adult Soccer Association.
State Cup Competitions are held to determine the team that will represent NTSSA at the Region III Competition, and Regional Cup competitions are held to determine the team that will represent Region III in the National Competition.
A player who is under the age of thirty (30) may be listed on the player pool of an Over 30 team, but may not participate in any game of that competition until the player has attained the age of thirty (30).
