While alcohol consumption was already quite popular among the general public in the United States (even George Washington had run a distillery), the moralistic elements managed to promote a caricature of the Irish as drunkards, and thus gained some support for their anti-alcohol crusade by painting drinking as foreign and un-American.
In 1854 they won significant victories in Congress and at the State level, again as an unofficial party driven by coordinated votes for sympathetic candidates; the secret societies themselves supplemented by supporting votes from the population at large, once it was made known who was sympathetic to the Know-Nothings' cause.
In 1854 members of the American Party stole and destroyed the block of granite contributed by Pope Pius IX for the Washington Monument.

Those who have lost out have discovered that they have nothing to fall back on except the basic state pension, which is now so miserly because of changes put in place during the first year of the Thatcher reign that those relying solely upon it for their retirement income are defined as destitute.

H-Net Review: Robert Cook on The American Party Battle: Election Campaign Pamphlets
In his prefatory remarks to this two-volume collection of political pamphlets, Joel Silbey contends that American political life was shaped and dominated by organized party conflict throughout the middle decades of the nineteenth century.
A nativist surge at the polls might have thwarted not only his attempts to establish the primacy of the slavery question (and by extension the fortunes of the new Republican party), but also, in view of his past record of courting foreign votes in New York, his own political future.
While Harvard University Press is to be commended for making these pamphlets available to a wider readership, readers should be alerted to the fact that the editor's preface and introduction appear in both volumes in spite of the fact that the two tomes are meant to be read in tandem.
