EH.Net Encyclopedia: The Bus Industry in the United States
Particularly in the United States where rail service has become geographically very limited an ethos of pathos and romance is still associated with the ‘Iron Horse.' Indeed there is an inverse relationship between the extent of academic and enthusiast knowledge and the use of modes of transportation.
The bus industry in the United States had always offered its services to a minority of the traveling public, but by the 1960s it had settled on catering to a smaller proportion of the nation's travelers.
Their efforts to remain competitive with their long-standing rival, especially in the busy northeastern corridor of the United States, proved to be very tough and revenue from the large bus operators dropped.

When the United States Auto Club assumed the duties of sanctioning the National Championship from the AAA Contest Board in 1956, the changes were essentially cosmetic.
The SCCA was a "club" in every sense of the term: in its early days, interest was not enough, you had to actually own a "sports car" and membership was not automatic, you had to be accepted by the membership (or at least the national office in Westport, Connecticut), and then perhaps you were in.
In 1962, USAC decided to discontinue the championship for a number of reasons, but the SCCA had seen which way the wind was blowing and starting in 1963, initiated its professional series, the United States Road Racing Championship (USRRC).

Yes and no. There is a resemblance between Fight Club and works such as Crash and Cocaine Nights in that both see the innocuous mundanities of everyday life as nothing more than the severely loosened cap on a seething underworld cauldron of unchecked impulse and social atrocity.
Fight Club is the story of an unnamed narrator, an insomniac yuppie who spends his days helping insurance companies get out of having to pay their claims.
The formation of Fight Club, as a vehicle to explore a more primitive masculinity, is completely plausible - as is the wildfire manner with which the club catches on.
