Genealogy Bulletin's Weekly Feature Article by Acclaimed Author and Genealogist, William Dollarhide
There are some special aspects to the 1840 federal census that make it one of the most interesting of all censuses taken in the United States since 1790.
Thus, the area of the United States in 1840 was everything except the southwestern quarter of the present-day area from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
Since the 1830 census, two new states were included in the 1840 census: Arkansas, admitted in 1836; and Michigan in 1837.

1840 US Census, Aroostook, Maine: transcriptions
The Sixth Census of the United States, undertaken in 1840, was a head of household census; that is, it recorded the name only of the heads of families; the rest of the information was recorded in terms of numbers of people within households, without names.
The census data is supposed to be as of June 1, 1840, the date on which census enumeration began; the census in Aroostook County seems to have been completed by the end of September 1840.
In addition to townships that are in the County of Aroostook, the 1840 census includes communities that are now in Madawaska County, New Brunswick (for an explanation, see Notes on the census of the Madawaska Settlements North and South of the St.John River).
