 United States States
The census classes the states of the United States into nine divisions, and at a still higher level, into four regions, which are groups of divisions.
The states which had seceded were re-admitted to the United States one by one, starting with Tennessee (1866-07-24) and ending with Georgia (1870-07-15).
The "United States of America" at that time referred to a loose confederation of thirteen states, plus unorganized territory to the west of the Applachian Mountains claimed by those states, often in competition.

The Copper Country is an important area for genealogist because it was the first home of many immigrants to the United States of America who later moved to other parts of the nation, to Canada, or even back to their homeland.
I purchased copies of the 1870 and 1900 Houghton County federal census from Heritage Quest at http://www.heritagequest.com/genealogy/CD-ROM/index.html.
Since I originally wrote this article several firms now sell federal and state census returns on CD-ROM.
