Census practices have varied over time, but for the 2000 Census, five out of six housing units in the U.S. received the short form, while one in six received the long form.
The Decennial Census is actually two Censuses taken concurrently -- the Census of Population (1790-present) counts numbers of persons and selected social and economic characteristics, the Census of Housing (1940-present) counts numbers of residential units and selected physical and financial characteristics.
The Constitution states: "The actual Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct."

Data on the largest urban places for the 1940-1990 period are based on census reports for each of these censuses.
Data in this report on land area for the 1910-1990 period were published in Census Bureau publications in decennial census reports and in the annual Financial Statistics of Cities prior to 1940 (see Dubester, 1950, citations 1656-1660).
Reports from the 1960 census include historical tables showing the total population of each incorporated place with 10,000 or more population in 1960 from the earliest census through 1960.

 TIMELINE of Asian American History between 1940 and 1949
On Dec. 9, 1941, two days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Census Bureau produced a report titled ``Japanese Population of the United States, Its Territories and Possessions.'' The next day the bureau issued a report on the Japanese population by citizenship and place of birth in selected cities.
HISTORY - In 1937, he was a 28-year-old lawyer known for his outspokenness about the Sino-Japanese War, in which Japan and China fought over Manchuria.Though the United States supported China, Ito spoke out for Japan.
On December 18, 1944, the United States Supreme Court decided the landmark cases of Korematsu v.United States and Ex parte Endo, the first of which approved of the forced eviction of more than 120,000 Japanese Americans from their homes, and the second of which forbade the continued incarceration of loyal American citizens.

Professor Ahlburg presented his work on Pacific Islanders in the United States as an example of applied research using IPUMS data; René Saa Vidal from INE Chile presented the possibility of a Geo-Demographic Information System based on harmonized census microdata.
For the period from 1940 through 2000, the IPUMS incorporates samples that were originally prepared by the Census Bureau.
The 1930 IPUMS sample represents the capstone of a twelve-year effort to create an integrated census database describing the American population from the mid-nineteenth century to the present.
