Hubert Horatio Humphrey II (May 27, 1911 – January 13, 1978) was the 38th Vice President of the United States, twice served as a United States Senator from Minnesota and was mayor of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Minnesota elected Humphrey to the United States Senate in 1948 on the DFL ticket, and he took office on January 3, 1949.
Eugene McCarthy, a DFL U.S. Senator from Minnesota who was up for re-election in 1970, realized that he had only a slim chance of winning even re-nomination (he had angered his party by opposing Johnson and Humphrey for the 1968 presidential nomination), and declined to run.

The 2000 election was decided by vote manipulation and obstruction (especially affecting African American votes) in Florida by Republicans and by the decision of a biased Supreme Court, despite Gore's popular majority of 540,000; legitimate votes in Florida and elsewhere were discarded.
