 Elections2004: U.S. Election Process
Because of its federal system, in which both the national government and the state governments have distinct powers, election day in the United States is actually the occasion for a series of simultaneous state and local elections, each held under separate administrative procedures.
Primaries may be held at all levels of government, including local contests for mayor, district races for the U.S. House of Representatives, statewide elections for governor or U.S. senator, and president of the United States.
Dick Cheney accepted the Republican Party's nomination for vice president of the United States September 1, saying this election will be a "defining moment" for U.S. national security.

Minor party and independent candidates are very occasionally elected, usually to local or state office, but the United States political system has historically supported catch all parties rather than coalition governments.
Given their complex support bases it is difficult to specifically categorise the two major parties' appeal.
Two of the major traumatic experiences in the nation's history were the American Civil War ( 1861 - 65) and the Great Depression of the 1930s.

The long-term economic health of the United States is threatened by $53 trillion in government debts and liabilities that start to come due in four years when baby boomers begin to retire.
The U.S. budget deficit, which the Congressional Budget Office already projects to reach a record $420 billion this fiscal year, will widen ``substantially'' as the percentage of the population over 65 nearly doubles by 2035, he said.
The present huge Sword of Damocles is that at present, circa 80% of US Current Account Debt, is funded by mainly China and Japan: other states fund it by holding US$ as reserve currency.

Jeff Mausolf, a former president of the Minnesota United Snowmobilers Association, said snowmobiles unfairly are accused of being dangerous and polluting.
Snowmobiles are permitted in 28 park units, but the heaviest use is in Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks in Wyoming, and in Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota.
There are plenty of places outside the national parks where snowmobilers can "pollute the air, disturb the flora and fauna, and disrupt peaceful contemplation" of nature, the petition says.
