In the United States, the Nasdaq Internet and technology stock bubble, which had begun its rise in 1999, completely deflated in the second half of 2000, as the so-called new economy associated with the Internet proved to be subject to the rules of the old economy.
Internationally and domestically, the United States government was the subject of condemnation from some quarters for aspects of its conduct of the “war on terror” in the second half of 2005.
The administration justified it by asserting that the president's powers to defend the United States under the Constitution were not subject to Congressional legislation and that the legislation authorizing the president to respond to the Sept., 2001, terror attacks implicitly also authorized the wiretapping.

The Department of History at the University of North Texas provides an unusually wide range of courses in military history, both European and American.
Undergraduates and graduate students can study the broad outlines of military history in classes on the evolution of warfare from the ancient Greeks to Napoleon and from Napoleon to the end of the Cold War.
Faculty members have published a wide array of books and scholarly articles on military and diplomatic history, including recent studies of the armistice after World War I, histories of various aspects of Texas during the Civil War, and examinations of the landing at Omaha Beach in World War II.

 Office of the Historian
The Office of the Historian is responsible, under law, for the preparation and publication of the official historical documentary record of U.S. foreign policy in the Foreign Relations of the United States series.
Its outreach activities include participating in the planning and installation of the historical components of the planned United States Center for Diplomacy in the Department, counseling private scholars and journalists on historical research issues, and responding to government and public inquiries on diplomatic history questions.
