US 181 begins in Corpus Christi, Texas at mile marker 0 to the south, through south-central Texas to just south of San Antonio to the north (mile marker 131), for a total length of 211 km.
As of 2004, the highway's northern terminus is at an intersection with Interstate 37 a mile (1.6 km) south of San Antonio, Texas' Interstate 410 loop, about 12 miles (19 km) northwest of Floresville.
In keeping with a US highway going through every county/parish seat, US 181 was named accordingly.

The report found that states were focusing on areas such as helping people make the transition from institutions to the community; promoting affordable and accessible housing; improving the recruitment and retention of direct care workers; allowing funding to follow the individual rather than the providers; and improving transportation that complies with the ADA requirements.

In 1929, the road was widened to 80 feet and given the name State Highway 16.
The road was further widened to 100 feet in 1935 and 120 feet in 1939, when it became known as United States Highway 181.
Then, in 1950, the state merged the Falls City School District with several other school districts in the vicinity, and the student body doubled in size.

SH 35 is not seen with the US 181 shield at the north end of the Nueces Bay Causeway.

State Highway 16, one of the original 26 state highways proposed in 1917, slaps up against the scenic hill country drive linking Bandera, Medina and Kerrville and slips past what may be the only human shrunken head in Texas.
The state removed SH 16 from the system and did not use the numbered highway again until the late 1920s when it was assigned as the future route of what is now United States Highway 181.

Along the way you can stop in Monterey at the Aquarium, get out along the way on Highway 1 for spectacular scenes of the California coast, or Hearst Castle, or see the sea otter and elephant seals on the way.
There is a pretty decent public transportation in the city of San Francisco, but there is so much to see and do throughout the state that really creates a need for a car.
If you can't or don't want to, you're going to have to use the bus or Amtrak, and these services are rather limited, to say the least.

Just some history: Sequoia is the second-oldest national park in the United States.
grass valley is facility laden for a small place,with all the major supermarkets etc while nevada city is as close to historical as the US gets -having been a major gold mining area camping at scott's flat lake is cool or carr lake etc off highway 20 (i think)if you want some foresty wilderness.
