		In the 1930 congressional elections the weak Democratic minority in the House of Representatives became a majority, and the Republican majority in the Senate dwindled to a plurality of one.
		Hoover, Herbert (1874-1964), 31st president of the United States.
		Hoover did not get his party's nomination, but the new Republican president, Warren G. Harding, appointed him secretary of commerce, a post Hoover held for more than seven years under two presidents.

	John Franklin Miller
		John Franklin Miller ( 9 June 1862 - 28 May 1936), an American politician, served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1917 to 1931.
		Miller ran for election to the seat being vacated by fellow Republican William Humphrey (who was running for United States Senate) in 1916, winning that election and the elections of 1918, 1920, 1922, 1924, 1926, and 1928.
		He was defeated for the Republican nomination in 1930 by Ralph Horr, who then won the general election.

		A little later the illness of Ward imposed on him the additional responsibility of leading the House of Representatives, and in May 1930 he was elected to succeed Ward as leader of the United Party.

		Taft was overweight, to the point that he became stuck in the bathtub in the White House several times, prompting the installation of a new bathtub capable of holding all of the men who installed it.
