  New Jersey's 13th congressional district - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This district is considered solidly Democratic, with the winner of the Democratic Party primary the near-certain winner in November's general election.
The two most prominent names running for the seat are the former Speaker of the New Jersey General Assembly, Albio Sires of West New York, and Assemblyman Joseph Vas, who is also Mayor of Perth Amboy.
Sires defeated Vas in the June 6th Democratic primary and is heavily favored to defeat Republican John Guarini on November 7 for the 2006 general election.

Sam Rayburn, Texas legislator, congressman, and longtime speaker of the United States House of Representatives, was born near the Clinch River in Roane County, eastern Tennessee, on January 6, 1882, son of William Marion and Martha (Waller) Rayburn.
He was reelected to the state legislature in 1908 and 1910; in his third term he served as speaker of the House.
His oath of office on April 7, 1913, as a member of the House of Representatives marked the beginning of more than forty-eight years of continuous service, the longest record of service in the House ever established (at the time of his death in 1961).

(D-NJ-08), a member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, offered praise for legislation reauthorizing the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) introduced today by Chairman Don Young (R-AK) and Ranking Member Jim Oberstar (D-MN).  Pascrell is an original co-sponsor of the bill.
The bill authorizes $298.7 billion for highways and related programs for fiscal years 2004 through 2009.   It also includes $69.2 billion for transit and $7.5 billion for safety programs over the six-year span.  All are significant increases over TEA 21, which authorized a total of $218 billion over six years.
It is expected that House bill will be marked up early next year.  It will likely be during the Committee process that high priority projects would be designated.
