LIBERTY PARTY - LoveToKnow Article on LIBERTY PARTY   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
At the same time, anti-slavery Whigs and Democrats were segregating in state politics, and the issue of excluding slavery from the new territory acquired from Mexico afforded a golden opportunity to unite all anti-slavery men on the principle of the Wilmot Proviso (1846).
The Liberty Party reached its greatest strength (casting 74,017 votes) in the state elections of 1846.
The Liberty Party, abandoning therefore its independent nominations, joined in the first convention and nominations of the Free Soil Party (q.v.), thereby practically losing its identity, although it continued until after the organization of the Republican Party to maintain something of a semi-independent organization.

Democratic Party (United States) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The party is currently the minority party in the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives.
Of the two major U.S. parties, the Democratic Party is to the left of the Republican Party, though its politics are not as consistently leftist as the traditional social democratic and labor parties in much of the world.
Civil libertarians also often support the Democratic Party because its positions on such issues as civil rights and separation of church and state are more closely aligned to their own than the positions of the Republican Party, and because the Democrats' economic agenda may be more appealing to them than that of the Libertarian Party.

Republican Party (United States) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Republican Party, often called the GOP (for Grand Old Party, although one early citation described it as the Gallant Old Party [1]), is one of the two major political parties in the United States (the other being the Democratic Party).
In the early 20th century, the traditional symbol of the Republican Party in Midwestern states such as Indiana and Ohio was the eagle, as opposed to the Democratic rooster.
Organized in Ripon, Wisconsin on February 28, 1854, as a party opposed to the expansion of slavery into new territories, the Party is not to be confused with the Democratic-Republican party of Thomas Jefferson or the National Republican Party of Henry Clay.

 Statue of Liberty -- History
The committee's goal was to present the Statue of Liberty to the United States on July 4, 1876, in honor of America's centennial.
When he heard that the Statue of Liberty was about to die from lack of funds, he saw his chance to take advantage of three distinct opportunities: to raise funds for the statue, to increase his newspaper's circulation, and to blast the rich for their selfishness.
From 1886 to 1902, the Statue of Liberty was maintained by the Lighthouse Board, an agency of the federal government, in conjunction with the Army and the American Committee.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Knownothingism
The growing immigration and the increase in the number of naturalized citizens strengthened the party with which these immigrants had become identified, and the extension of their political influence, as shown at the elections, was used by the advocates of proscription as a justification of their policy.
Although the existence of the new party was generally known, and its political activities soon became manifest, all inquiries by outsiders respecting its organization and purpose, and especially as to the names of members, were met by those identified with the movement with the answer: "I don't know".

 The Constitutionalist Party
Without an arbiter to settle disputes or a justice system to defend civil liberties, unrestricted human freedom becomes a society in which those with the power (via weaponry, brute force, or sheer numbers) to enforce their laws and moral codes will be able to do so over others, effectively removing their liberty.
For the most liberty to be possible, the people must give up some of their power to establish a government that will act as the enforcer of their rights as well as execute functions needed by a large nation that are unable to be provided privately.
Therefore, the Constitutionalist Party seeks to improve America and preserve the freedom of the people by supporting a closer adherence to the Constitution as well as promoting ideas and policies that will realistically improve the state of human liberty in the United States.
