The United States Navy Mark 12 Mod 0/1 Special Purpose Rifle (SPR) is a rifle that has been in service with the United States special forces in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
This weapon system, used by Special Forces units of both the US Army and US Navy, is a heavily modified deviation from the familiar AR15/M16 line of infantry weapons, and thus is chambered for NATO standard 5.56 x 45 mm caliber ammunition.
The exact history of the Mk 12 is still something under debate, but its become apparent that there are between four and five prime iterations of the weapon, culminating in the last Mk 12 Mod 1 version.

A FAL or G3 would be the obvious choice for a full power battle rifle, but I don't think we'll see one for quite a while.
I'd also like a Battle Rifle like the FN-FAL or G3, but they have made their weapon choice and i'll be happy with the G11 when they release it.
I guess theres not much point in a battle rifle until a decent damage system is implemented.

In this weapon the SR stands for sniper rifle, in the SR16 I belive(about 99.99% sure on this) it stands for special rifle.

I think the point is that rappelling down from a helicopter is definitely okay, but how often is a grappeling hook standard equipment for a military unit.
I would imagine it falls in the same fantasy world as having a crossbow for a standard military unit.
Many Navy SEALS were issued crossbows in nam, they would get them in exchange for rifles that they would give to the indigionous people that hated the VC and NVA, i forgot their names, it's on the tip of my tounge, they were trained by the green berets and were on the MIKE force....MONTAGnYARDS!
