Created in 2002, its mission is to protect the United States homeland, and support local, state, and federal authorities.

 Newly Activated NORTHCOM Includes National Guard
The United States Northern Command, which includes a dozen members of the National Guard, was hailed as America's new line of defense against attacks on the homeland and the ravages of natural disasters during an Oct. 1 activation ceremony in central Colorado.
Commanded by Air Force Gen. Ralph Eberhart, the Northern Command has been formed during the year since the terrorist attacks against New York City and Washington, D.C., to serve two purposes.
The Northern Command's staff of 200 members of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard and reserve components is expected to increase to 500 during the next year.

The Department of Defense established U.S. Northern Command in 2002 to consolidate, under a single unified command, existing missions that were previously executed by other military organizations.
Just like the European Command, the Pacific Command or the Central Command, except there's one big difference: Northern Command's job, since its activation in October 2002, is to defend our homeland and to provide support to civil authorities whenever directed by the President or Secretary of Defense.

The new command will stand up Oct. 1, 2002, at Peterson Air Force Base, Colo. The NORTHCOM commander will be responsible for homeland defense and also serve as head of the North American Aerospace Defense Command, a U.S.-Canada command.
The current NORAD commander is also the commander of U.S. Space Command, also at Peterson.
