The United States Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, which was established during the American Revolutionary War and was disbanded in 1790.
The United States went to war in 1846 against Mexico and the Navy contributed by instituting a blockade, assisting the American takeover of California, and participating in the U.S. military's first large-scale amphibious operation at Vera Cruz.
United States naval aviation fully came of age in World War II, when it became clear following the Attack on Pearl Harbor, the Battle of the Coral Sea, and the Battle of Midway that aircraft carriers and the planes that they carried had replaced the battleship as the greatest weapon on the seas.

Compared to Missouri and her sisters, only the two larger Japanese Yamato-class battleships, with their 18-inch guns and thicker armor could claim to match or excel them, although the Japanese vessels were much slower, had much inferior radar and would probably have fared poorly in a gun duel with the American behemoths.

Unfortunately, Dulin and Garzke miss the point: the average reader with an interest in naval architecture is most likely to have technical experience with, or possesses graduate-school background, which calls for a greater depth of writing (and dedication to subject) by the author.
This book, along with their books on Allied and US Battleships, belongs on the shelf of any wargamer or warship historian/enthusiast.
