Progressive Consumers Fed. Credit Union v. United States
Just as federal law governs the issue of priority, it is equally well-settled that "in the application of a federal revenue act, state law controls in determining the nature of the legal interest.
Federal law remains intact to determine both the choateness of the state created lien and its order of priority in relation to any competing federal liens.
To the contrary, federal courts should presume applicability of state common law doctrines in determining the status of state created liens.

In the United States, education is a state, not federal, responsibility, and the laws and standards vary considerably.
The United States does not have an official language at federal level; nevertheless, English is the first and/or only language of the overwhelming majority of the population and serves as the de facto official language: English is the language used for legislation, regulations, executive orders, treaties, federal court rulings, and all other official pronouncements.
The United States may be regarded as an example of a constitutional republic or as a liberal democracy, with a government composed of and operating through a set of limited powers imposed by its design and enumerated in that design or Constitution of the United States of America.

Legal Remedies for Terrorist Harms Suing Arafat Under the Alien Tort Statute
American federal law confers jurisdiction "to try any person who, by the law of war, is subject to trial by a military tribunal...." Additionally, federal law grants jurisdiction to the federal district courts for all offenses against the laws of the United States.
The Alien Tort Statute authorizes the United States federal courts to deal with civil claims by aliens alleging acts committed against international law when the alleged wrongdoers can be found in the United States.
Moreover, as all international law is a part of the law of the United States, every presidential reception of Arafat was also a serious crime under American law - a boldfaced rejection of both Article 6 of the U.S. Constitution and of several major decisions of the United States Supreme Court.

The Constitution of the United States is the supreme law of the United States of America.
The United States is a common law country, and courts are obliged to follow the precedents established in prior cases.
The U.S. Constitution styles itself the "supreme law of the land." Courts have interpreted this phrase to mean that when laws (including state constitutions) that have been passed by state legislatures, or by the (national) U.S. Congress, are found to conflict with the federal constitution, these laws are ultra vires and have no effect.

The United States Constitution and some state constitutions provide additional protection where the employer is a governmental body or the government has taken significant steps to foster the discriminatory practice of the employer.
Some laws extend similar protection as provided by the federal acts to employers who are not covered by those statutes.
In the employment context the right of equal protection limits the power of the state and federal governments to discriminate in their employment practices by treating employees, former employees, or job applicants unequally because of membership in a group (such as a race or sex).

The United States also holds several other territories, districts and possessions, notably the federal district of the District of Columbia, which is the nation's capital, and several overseas insular areas, the most significant of which are Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, and the United States Virgin Islands.
However, the structure of the United States was profoundly changed in 1788 when the states replaced the Articles of Confederation with the United States Constitution; often, sources use the date each of the original 13 states adopted the Constitution as the date on that state "entered the Union" (became part of the United States).
