Half dollar (United States coin) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Half Dollar of the United States has been produced nearly every year since the inception of the United States Mint in 1794.
Silver coins (those of ten cent value and above) began to disappear from circulation, leading the United States to change to a layered composition coin made of a copper core laminated between two cupro-nickel faces for the 1965 coinage year.
By the time mintage figures could match normal demand and the coin's composition was changed to match the rest of the coinage, both businesses and the public had adapted to a world in which the half dollar did not circulate.

Dollar coins have found little popular acceptance in modern circulation in the United States, despite several attempts since the late 1970s to phase-in a coin in place of the one-dollar bill.
Original silver dollars from this period are highly prized by coin collectors and are exceptionally valuable, especially the 1804 silver dollar, which is one of the rarest and most famous coins in the world.
Susan B. Anthony dollar coins were sometimes referred to as "Carter quarters." This was a snide reference to both the deterioration of the value of the dollar during Jimmy Carter's term and the Anthony dollar's strong physical resemblance to the quarter, often causing it to be mistakenly spent as such.

The tradition of the U.S. dollar denomination coin was born with the pewter, brass and silver composition 1776 Continental dollar coin varieties.
Although the silver dollar couldn’t compete on par with the Spanish milled dollar due to the lower weight and purity of the silver in the dollar, according to law the silver dollar was actually supposed to be even lighter.
Following the letter of the law, the dollar struck by the United States was supposed to be of 371.25 grains of silver rather than 374.4 grains to which it had been struck in 1794 and early 1795.

 Franklin Half Dollar
In a speech at the unveiling of the Franklin half dollar, Ross recalled that people had urged her to place Franklin's portrait on the cent because he was identified so closely with the maxim "A penny saved is twopence clear" (often misquoted as "A penny saved is a penny earned").
Ross explained her choice of the half dollar: "You will agree, I believe, that the fifty-cent piece, being larger and of silver, lends itself much better to the production of an impressive effect," she declared.
This had been required by law on the half dollar since 1792 and was reaffirmed by the Coinage Act of 1873, which mandated the placement of an eagle on every U.S. silver coin larger than the dime.
