His election as president was a disappointment to his wife, the first First Lady of the United States, who wanted to continue living in quiet retirement at Mount Vernon after the war.
Washington was unanimously elected as the first President of the United States on February 4, 1789.
To date he is the only person ever unanimously chosen by the electoral college in a presidential election (a feat he duplicated in 1792).

On January 7, 1789 the United States held the first Presidential Election as decreed by the Election Ordinance passed by the Confederation Congress on September 13, 1788.
On February 4, 1789 the Electors voted George Washington as the first President of the United States with 69 of the 138 votes cast.
North Carolina and Rhode Island had not yet ratified the Constitution and New York legislature was unable to pass an election act in time.

As with most of CQ Press's reference books, Presidential Elections, 1789-2000 is an excellent source for professors and libraries to have on their bookshelves.
Another particularly useful box is titled "In Wake of 2000 Election 'News Disaster,' Pressure Mounts for Voting, Coverage Reforms." The box does a nice job explaining the various voting systems used in the United States and examines the problems with Voter News Service's (VNS) Florida exit poll and the media's efforts to reform its coverage.
Not only can one find the popular vote totals by state (as is in Presidential Elections, 1789-2000), but s/he can see the vote broken down by county as well.

Under the new Constitution of 1789, electors were selected for the Electoral College; however, during the 1789 election of Washington, Presidential electors were elected by the people in only five states, and the lack of vote counts and other records makes the reconstruction of the total popular vote impossible.
Lastly, seven years prior to Washington's 1789 proclamation for Thanksgiving, President Hanson and the United States Congress urged the newly-formed American states to observe Thursday, November 28, 1782 as a Thanksgiving Day.
The second Constitution of 1789 differed from the Articles in that it called for an electoral count to elect Washington to the office of the President, However, it should be noted that the election process was not initially executed as asserted in the Constitution of 1789.
