 USATODAY.com - Pro-government candidate Roh wins S.Korean presidential election
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Pro-government candidate Roh Moo-hyun won South Korea's presidential election Thursday in a vote that could affect relations with the United States and communist North Korea.
Chung, a former presidential candidate who dropped out of the race to support Roh, said the United States was a close South Korean ally and had no reason to start a fight with North Korea.
Turnout among the nation's 35 million eligible voters was 70.2%, almost 11% lower than in the 1997 presidential election.

North Korea once again a player in South Korean election
Fears of North Korean nuclear ambitions could determine South Korea's presidential election Thursday, with one main candidate advocating a tough line on the North while his rival espouses a more conciliatory approach.
Chung said he withdrew his support because Roh warned on the campaign trail Wednesday that South Korea could be dragged into a war between the United States and North Korea.
North Korea said it needed to generate electricity because the United States had reneged on commitments to provide power, but Washington said the communist government was violating several nuclear arms control agreements.
