		The United States does not have an official language at federal level; nevertheless, English is the first and/or only language of the overwhelming majority of the population and serves as the de facto language: English is the language used for legislation, regulations, executive orders, treaties, federal court rulings, and all other official pronouncements.
		The structure of the United States was profoundly changed in 1788, however, when the states replaced the Articles of Confederation with the United States Constitution ; often sources use the date each of the original thirteen states adopted the Constitution as the date that state "entered the Union" (became part of the United States).
		The United States also holds several other territories, districts and possessions, notably the federal district of the District of Columbia, which is the nation's capital, and several overseas insular areas, the most significant of which are Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, and the United States Virgin Islands.
