Valiant Comics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was the first 90's company to attempt to follow a real-world timeline, where events in the comics occurred at the pace similar to their publication schedule.
From the beginning, all Valiant Comics titles could be divided into two groups - titles that were set in the late 1990s and titles that were set in the 41st century (beginning with 4000 A.D.)The heroes from the present weren't aware of the heroes of the future (and vice-versa) until the Unity conflict.
In 1996, Fabian Nicieza, a former editor and writer from Marvel Comics, was hired as senior vice-president and editor-in-chief and was given the task of revamping the Valiant Comics properties.

Comics & Culture: A Step Towards Comic 'Absolution'? by Aarnoud Rommens
Comics and Culture: Analytical and Theoretical Approaches to Comics (2000) is a case in point and proves once more that the comic strip is an exciting medium and merits to be taken seriously.
As the comic strip is seeking to define its own theoretical foundation, it is inevitable that it does so in dialogue with the insights developed in these three by either rejecting or transforming concepts to the need of the medium.
As the superhero comics of the eighties were stuffed with visions of impending doom, the nineties have shown a change of course towards stories with 'an evolutionary, non-apocalyptic content' (215).

The Aesthetics of Comics by David Carrier
Comics in my view are essentially a composite art: when they are successful, they have verbal and visual elements seamlessly combined.
With comics, by contrast, already at the time of Giotto all of the necessary visual technology was available, but their development was possible only when there was a felt need for a readily accessible popular art.
The meaning of a comic is determined not by the artist but by the audience; to interpret a comic we need to identify the ways in which it reflects the fantasies of its public.

 Otto's Coffee Shop
By "unity of creative vision" I am referring to the sense that a single story is being told, whether finite or infinite, and every part of every issue is building on that story without throwing the reader out of it by lapses in logic or drastic changes in art style.
The final unity, then, is unity of editorial direction, and this is the one that I have the most trouble with today (some would argue hear that a strong editorial department is the opposite of "creative," but I think it can work both ways).
Unity of editorial direction is best represented by Marvel comics from the 60s through the late 80s: every issue of almost every book (excepting mainly licensed properties like GI Joe, Transformers and Conan) appeared to be telling a single story, the story of the Marvel Universe.

Problems with the conceptual and editorial side of comics may seem closed to outsiders and without referents in the larger human experience, but a little bit of thought can reveal common patterns with better-known pieces of day-to-day life.
Long-term readers of a comics franchise that undergoes a continuity revision will typically note points of damage that pertain to selected favorite properties or concepts; and, if the revision takes out too much, it can weaken the very matrix of interconnections that define a shared universe concept.
Unity 2000, what little of it actually appeared, contained work by freelancers for a division of a company bought by game manufacturers who decided to shut down their comics production for good rather than spend any more money on a capital intensive product that must rely on volume rather than margins in sales.

Many comic book collectors and investors purchased multiple copies of 1993 Valiant titles, but were unable to obtain more than a few of the 1991-92 Valiant issues due to smaller print runs compared to other comic books of that time.
By mid-1994, many of the collectors and investors who flocked to the comic book scene in 1992 were leaving, hoping to liquidate their inventories — to cut their losses in most cases — and a flood of recent comic books perceived as “valuable” by monthly price guides were unloaded upon the secondary market.
For Valiant comic books, this meant that recent Valiant comics purchased for $2.25 to $3.95 each were becoming available for “bargain bin prices”, often $1.00, $0.50, or even less.

Lippert stressed that the Unity Project funds were not intended to "create new programs that would need continuing funding." Another important aspect of the Unity Project, according to Lippert, is that its grant guidelines are based on a community-wide self-assessment.
