The Church of the United Brethren in Christ and the Brethren in Christ Church (or River Brethren) owe their origins to the combined labors of Reformed pastor Philip William Otterbein and Mennonite Martin Boehm, beginning in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in the latter half of the 18th century.
The Social Brethren originated in Saline County, Illinois in 1867, the result of an attempt to put the slavery issue away in favor of uniting on a common belief in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The Church of the Lutheran Brethren is neither Anabaptist nor pietistic, but is the result of a late 19th century spiritual awakening among Lutheran congregations in the upper midwestern United States.

The Brethren, officially known as the German Baptists throughout the nineteenth century (Melton, 441), mixed pietism with the Anabaptist tradition, blending a renewed emphasis on spirituality with the Anabaptist emphasis on outward expression of faith.
As the Brethren Church grew and expanded, moving them beyond their traditional agricultural communities, and as industrialization made more "worldly" products available to everyone, they became increasingly more mainstream, and less recognizable as a distinct body.
They follow traditional Brethren beliefs and practices: women are expected to have long hair and to wear a head covering, men are to have short hair, no musical instruments are accepted in the worship time, and of course divorce and remarriage is not allowed.

The tendency of unity movements is to affect the church with less love and knowledge of the truth.
It seems that most brethren have always had the inclination to think like Israel of old, and require a king to rule over them "like the other nations." When these chasms in the body have occurred, the next step is some method to "join" with those of the denominations about them.

Many Mennonite Brethren work for numerous inter- and nondenominational missionary and evangelical organizations; this is especially the consequence of a gradual drifting toward the mainline fundamentalist-evangelical stream in North America.

The only objection is that unity based on doctrinal compromise (which may happen if some of the groups merge, and did happen in the case of the CGCF/UCG 'merger') is not good thing (it should be also understood that some minor differences of opinion are normal and not considered to be doctrinal compromise).

The Moravian Church, or Unitas Fratrum (Unity of Brethren), as it has been officially known since 1457, arose as followers of Hus gathered in the village of Kunvald, about 100 miles east of Prague, in eastern Bohemia, and organized the church.
By 1517 the Unity of Brethren numbered at least 200,000 with over 400 parishes.
The Thirty Years War (1618-1648) brought further persecution to the Brethren's Church, and the Protestants of Bohemia were severely defeated at the battle of White Mountain in 1620.

The flame of reform was not extinguished by the death of John Hus in 1415, for a small group of Hussites gathered on the estate of Lititz, about 100 miles east of Prague, and organized a church in 1457.
Brethren in the new world were at first a loose knit confederation of settlements.

Jindřich (Henry) Juren, minister and teacher, the son of Cenek and Antonie (Kosut) Juren, was born on March 20, 1850, at Čermna, Bohemia, where his father was a Protestant minister of the Evangelical Brethren Unity.
Between 1881 and 1888 he was the only minister of the Unity of the Brethren in Texas and served the spiritual needs of the scattered congregations in the state.
