Copyright - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Copyright is a set of exclusive rights granted by government for a limited time to regulate the use of a particular form, way or manner in which an idea or information is expressed.
Copyright is a type of intellectual property; designs or industrial designs may be a separate or overlapping form of intellectual property in some jurisdictions.
Copyright concepts are perceived to be under challenge in the modern technological era, from the increasing use of peer to peer filesharing, to the downward trend in profits for major record labels and the movie industry.

Universal Copyright Convention - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Universal Copyright Convention (UCC), adopted at Geneva in 1952, is one of the two principal international conventions protecting copyright; the other is the Berne Convention.
The UCC was developed by UNESCO as an alternative to the Berne Convention for those states which disagreed with aspects of the Berne Convention, but still wished to participate in some form of multilateral copyright protection.
Berne Convention states were concerned that the existence of the UCC would encourage parties to the Berne Convention to leave that convention and adopt the UCC instead.

Itar-Tass Russian News Agency v. Russian Kurier: Federal District Court Applies the Berne Convention, United States and ...
The Berne Convention, the more authoritative of the two conventions, proclaims the two governing principles applicable in the international context: "minimum standards" and "national treatment." Under the minimum standards principle, a member of the Berne Union is required to protect foreign works if a very limited, easy-to-satisfy set of conditions is met.
Under the national treatment principle of the Berne Convention and the Universal Copyright Convention, the applicable law always is that of the state where the infringement occurred, not that of the state of which the author is a national, or in which the work was first published.
While the Court's interpretation of the Russian Copyright Act was favorable to the plaintiffs, some think that the end result of this case could have been even more favorable to the plaintiffs had the Court applied U.S. law to the question of the plaintiffs' copyright interest.

Generally speaking the copyright protection given in New Zealand also extends to work originating from countries that are party to the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic works or to the Universal Copyright Convention.
Conversely, countries that are party to either convention or the GATT Agreement must give works originating from New Zealand the same protection that they give works produced by their own nationals.
However, in a small number of countries that are only party to the Universal Copyright Convention, it is necessary to comply with certain formalities in order to claim copyright.
