The Modern Word - "A New Universal History of Infamy" Review
The seven “histories” were followed by five short parodies collected under the heading of “Etcetera” – fragments of original writing that Borges brazenly attributed to authors such as Burton and Swedenborg.
Hughes’ infamous histories have neither the variety nor the subtlety of Borges’ – despite the occasional flash of wit, most of Hughes’ rogues are insane sociopaths, responsible for much useless death and misery, their misdeeds all too easily accessorized.
The droll manner in which he begins and ends his histories is deliciously satisfying, and the sketches abound with marvelous touches of sardonic humor.

EAWC Essay: The Educational Value of History
History is the comment made afterward, when the fight is over and ended and the combatants are cold in their graves; and the duty of history is to hear all sides and all persons, to weigh all pleas, to sift all testimonies, to be fair to all.
History is for time, what travel is for space; it is an intellectual journey across oceans and continents of duration, and of ages both remote from our own and vitalized and enriched by stupendous events.
Without history, nearly all the practical wisdom of mankind, gained through innumerable blunders and mishaps, would be lost, and the same blunders and the same mishaps would have to be repeated and to be suffered over and over again on the part of successive generations ignorant of what had happened before.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Church History
Ecclesiastical history is the scientific investigation and the methodical description of the temporal development of the Church considered as an institution founded by Jesus Christ and guided by the Holy Ghost for the salvation of mankind.
Objectively speaking, history is the genetical development of the human mind and of human life itself in its various aspects, as it comes before us in series of facts, whether these pertain to individuals, or to the whole human race, or to any of its various groups.
Thus we have the history of the popes, of cardinals, of councils, collections of the lives and legends of the saints, the history of orders and congregations; also of patrology, dogma, liturgy, worship, the law, constitution, and social institutions of the Church.

Universal's rich entertainment legacy can be traced back to 1906, when 39 year-old Bavarian immigrant Carl Laemmle (pronounced LEM-lee) opened his first nickelodeon theater in Chicago.
However, the Universal tour was temporarily halted in the late 1920s, when "talkies" became the norm and producers demanded a set free of visitor's noise.
The Universal Studios Tour was revived in 1964, and MCA/Universal also became a pioneer in location-based entertainment during the 1970s and 1980s.

Universal histories, however, are not simply a Western imperial product imposed upon the rest of the world: they probably have a relationship with the creation stories told by peoples around the world.

 Idea For A Universal History
Many have answers to questions of history, Kant, with a curious brilliance, had the presence of mind to but ask, and leave some answer to the future, for he must have sensed that he was given inadequate data.
History, as he tells us, has to be looked at in its full, universal time sweep, for only in history as a whole is nature's purpose realized.
And history has to be considered from a cosmopolitan point of view because its necessary goal is a 'perfect civic constitution of mankind', a point which Kant stresses not only in the Idea, but in Eternal Peace, where he defends "the idea of a cosmopolitan world law' against the charge of utopianism.
