Universal horror - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Universal Horror is the name given to the distinctive horror films made by Universal Studios in California from the 1920s through to the 1950s.
Universal's earliest success in the horror genre was Lon Chaney's The Phantom of the Opera in 1925, for which the actor famously designed and endured a torturous make-up.
Universal was the distributor for several films from the British Hammer Studios in the early 1960s, enabling Hammer to replicate many features of the original Universal horrors for the first time.

Horror film - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The horror film is often associated with low budgets and exploitation, but major studios and well-respected directors have made intermittent forays into the genre.
The Canadian film Cube (1997) was perhaps one of the few horror films of the 1990s to be based around a relatively novel concept; it was able to evoke a wide range of different fears, and touched upon a variety of social themes (such as fear of bureaucracy) that had previously been unexplored.
Other advances in horror were in Japanese animation (for example the gruesome 'guro' animation), as Japanese culture reached new heights of popularity in the West (although the first horror-themed anime had begun appearing in the West by the late 1980s).

Universal Studios made a name for themselves in silent horror, including several groundbreaking films with Lon Chaney, the legendary Man of a Thousand Faces.
Universal had made a number of horror films during the silent era, but Todd Browing's Dracula, starring Bela Lugosi, begins the "Universal Monster" series that still rakes in money for the studio, in the form of video, toy, and collectable sales.
Universal let the series die with quickly-made, all-star monster rallies that featured Glenn Strange as the Monster (imitating Lugosi's stretch-armed strutting), Chaney as the Wolf Man (once again, returned from the dead, and killed again in each film), and John Carradine as Dracula.

 Horror Films
Horror films are often combined with science fiction when the menace or monster is related to a corruption of technology, or when Earth is threatened by aliens.
Horror films, when done well and with less reliance on horrifying special effects, can be extremely potent film forms, tapping into our dream states and the horror of the irrational and unknown, and the horror within man himself.
Universal Studios was best-known for its pure horror films in the 30s and 40s, horror-dom's characters (Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy, the Invisible Man, and the Wolf Man) and its classic horror stars, Hungarian matinee idol Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff.

Most people think that the Universal Horror began in the early 1930’s with the productions of Dracula and Frankenstein, but the studio produced some excellent horror films in the twenties.
Though it would become clear during this period that the horror movie cycle was beginning to run out of steam it still introduced the last great monster to the audience and it would bring the last in the classic series of Frankenstein.
Many more horror films starring the famous monsters would appear during the remainder of the 1940’s, but all of them are forgettable, with the possible exception of Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948) and that is a comedy.
