Universal Wrestling Federation (Japan) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The original Japanese-based Universal Wrestling Federation (UWF) was a Japanese professional wrestling promotion from 1984 to 1986, formed by wrestlers who had left New Japan Pro Wrestling.
It was revived as the Newborn UWF in 1988.
The UWF's wrestling style has made inroads in its root promotion, New Japan, where natives Yuji Nagata, Koji Kanemoto, and Katsuyori Shibata use UWF-style kicks despite having never competed in a shoot-style promotion as their peers Minoru Tanaka, Masayuki Naruse, and Kakihara (who joined New Japan in the early 2000's) have.

Shoot wrestling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shoot wrestling is a general term that describes a range of hybrid fighting systems originating in Japan in the late 1970s, in close association with Japanese professional wrestling.
The shoot wrestling techniques are often applied in shoot-style professional wrestling matches, which feature predetermined outcomes, but with much technique applied in a stiff or full contact manner.
The birth of shoot wrestling can arguably be traced back to Japan in the 1970s, when German professional wrestler Karl Gotch taught catch wrestling techniques to a group of Japanese professional wrestlers including Antonio Inoki, Tatsumi Fujinami, Yoshiaki Fujiwara, Satoru Sayama, Masami Soranaka and Akira Maeda.

Founded by upstate New York wrestling promoter Pedro Martinez, the NWF was originally based in Buffalo but later formed a working agreement with New Japan Pro Wrestling that moved the circuit to a permanent residence in Japan.
Muchnick’s “Wrestling at the Chase” broadcast was one of the longest-running TV programs in the sport’s history before Bob Geigel took over the circuit in 1982.

Any pretence to be a sporting competition was dropped in the late 1990s, when Vince McMahon's World Wrestling Federation began describing its events as "sports entertainment," coincident with a formal change of moniker to World Wrestling Entertainment.
Currently, the only major wrestling organisations left in North America are World Wrestling Entertainment, and the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), and its member federation NWA:TNA.
However, outside North America, there are others federations in Japan and Mexico, where masked wrestlers are particularly popular.

Vince McMahon and Antonio Inoki: The fight of their professional lives
New Japan Pro Wrestling and World Wrestling Entertainment have a lot in common; both are the focal point of their respective regions, both are multi million-money companies, both have a great talent base with great ability to match and both are headed by lager than life characters and astute businessmen.
For a time, Inoki was the most powerful figure in the entire industry, and New Japan was the top promotion on the planet, with such names as Riki Choshu, Tatsumi Fujinami, Bruiser Brody, Abdullah the Butcher and Inoki himself all on top, and largely working dramatic matches that told the story in the ring.
WWE management may be able to throw their shareholders off the scent, but the general viewing public know the promotion is struggling at the moment and again know it'll take a lot, both resources and time, for it to turn around.
