Protestant church in the United States formed in 1961 by the merger of the American Unitarian Association (see Unitarianism) and the Universalist Church of America.
Having largely shared common concerns and positions throughout the 19th and 20th cent., the two churches formed a Council of Liberal Churches in 1953 as a preliminary step to merger.
The principal purpose of the merger was to link the churches' headquarters organizations and to enable them to speak as one on social and political questions.

 Unitarian-Universalist Church of Kent, Records, 1880 - 1977
Portage County first heard the Universalist gospel in 1814, and Universalists founded the Brimfield Universalist Church in 1837, not far from Kent.
Brimfield Universalists merged with those of Kent in 1922, and contact was first established with the Unitarians on a local basis in 1930 when the First Universalists Church of Kent invited Reverend Horace Westwood to preach.
When the Universalist Church of America merged in 1961 with the American Unitarian Association to form the Unitarian-Universalist Association, the Kent church followed suit and affiliated with the new organization.

When the Unitarian Universalist Association closed its Historical Library in 1967, many of the books and periodicals, and nearly all the pamphlets and manuscripts, came to Andover-Harvard.
In the years since this original gift, the Unitarian Universalist Association has presented to the library much of the archival records of the old American Unitarian Association and continues to periodically transfer its current archives.
A grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) in 1992 made it possible for the library to sort, arrange, and describe nearly 1,200 feet of institutional records (primarily those of the Unitarian Universalist Association, the Council of Liberal Churches, the Universalist Church of America, and the American Unitarian Association.
