		The Universiade is an international sporting and cultural festival that is staged every two years in a different city and is second in importance only to the Olympic Games.
		The Universiades and Championships are open to all student athletes who have not been out of university or its equivalent for more than a year and that are between 17 and 28 years of age.
		Since, like the Universiade, the conference is biennial, FISU hopes to give students and university sport officials the opportunity to meet more often to discuss topics related to education, culture and sport through forum seminars.

		The Universiade is open to competitors between the ages of 17 and 28 in the year of the Games, who are full-time post-secondary students (university, college, CEGEP) or have graduated from a post-secondary institution within the previous year of the event.
		The 23rd Summer Universiade to be held Aug. 11-21, 2005 in Izmir, Turkey will feature some 9,000 participants including 8,000 student-athletes from 170 countries competing in the following sports: archery, athletics, basketball, diving, fencing, gymnastics, sailing, soccer, swimming, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, water polo, and wrestling.

	Winter Universiades
		The first Winter Universiade was staged in 1960, and was preceded by the World Student Games held for the first time in Cortina d’Ampezzo in 1928.
		The international students sport movement was reunited as FISU in 1959 and the first Winter Universiade took place in Chamonix in 1960.
		Yugoslav student-athletes took part in every Winter Universiades so far and won a total of 23 medals - 4 golds, 8 silvers and 11 bronzes.
