Santiago, February 11, 2000 Summary Structural adjustment policies, changes in public policy focus andrepression of collective action during the military government contributed to a radical transformation of the conditions and outlook of theprofessional associations of teachers and physicians.
(Chile 1997:112) The cause of this deterioration was attributed to the fact thatteachers’ salaries are not associated with professional performance.Based on this understanding, Frei’s government proposed asystem of remuneration based on pay for merit or results that recognizedpersonal effort.
Chile’s teachers hold an influential position in this organization, and they areconstantly undertaking protest actions that could lead to national strikes. However, the rate of unionization in Chile is barely over 12% of the total labor force, and the radical political positions promoted by the union leadership findlimited political support among the general population.

SANTIAGO, Jun. 22, 2004 (IPS/GIN) -- Inti Illimani, the name of a folk music group that has made history in Chile and around the world as proponents of Latin America's "New Song" movement, is today the focus of a heated dispute between its founding members.
Like Quilapayún, the group was identified with Chile's Communist Youth, and threw itself behind the presidential campaign for the Popular Unity coalition in 1970, which succeeded in putting socialist Salvador Allende in the country's highest office.
During the loosening of the dictatorial grip that involved a plebiscite on dictator Augusto Pinochet's mandate in October of 1988, Inti Illimani was allowed to return to Chile, and became the embodiment of the "No" campaign, which helped defeat dictator Augusto Pinochet at the ballot box.
