Last October, a shadow was cast on the integrity of the prestigious private university when it revealed that two players in its men's basketball team had faked their high-school equivalency tests to gain admission to the college.
UAAP and PBA commentator Dominic Uy estimates that the total cost of running a strong college basketball team, including recruitment equipment like computers and editing machines, is at least P10 million to P12 million a year.
Dean Gilda Uy from the University of the Philippines College of Human Kinetics meanwhile reports proudly that this year, for the first time ever, they were able to raise funds from alumni specifically for basketball.

In an emergency meeting held at the University of Santo Tomas, Ateneo failed to submit the necessary documents proving that Michael Justine Zialcita is a Filipino citizen, forcing the board to make the decision of forfeiting the team's three victories in eight games in the double-round eliminations.
Defending champion University of the Philippines, which finished the eliminations tied with Adamson and National University for the top spot with their identical 5-3 cards, is now seeded no. 1 and the Falcons the No. 2 team.

The De La Salle University (DLSU) administration on Thursday threatened to break away from the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) following the one-year suspension imposed on the school for fielding two ineligible basketball players, DZMM reported.
Luistro said the letter seeks to clarify the UAAP verdict on the Green Archers and at the same time criticize the league for blaming the fate of cage stars Mark Benitez and Mateo Gatchalian on school authorities.
Edmundo Fernandez, said the league should not consider the school as the culprit because it was the one that revealed the fake documents submitted by the bastkeball players.
