Maryville, Missouri – University officials had tried for several years to find an abandoned historic bridge to span an old railroad cut in the heart of the campus.
University officials did not want to tempt students to drive over the bridge with their motor vehicles, so the 120 foot long structure was designed to be only six feet wide.
Durable Ipe wood was specified for the bridge’s decking and Continental Bridge predrilled electric wire access holes in the uprights to accept the security lighting.

It was believed that a University female student was not officially a coed until she had been kissed on the Student Bridge over a passing train at midnight.
Moving the bridge to the Valparaiso University campus would do several things (1) allow alumni to revisit a part of their past, (2) allow current students and alumni to connect through common experience, and (3) allow the opportunity for students to create their own Student Bridge memories.
