The University is however to be commended for its general management of probation and in particular, the appropriateness of the University's PGCAP and its effective use of peer observation through the use of mentors.

When University College, Nottingham, opened in 1881 at Shakespeare Street, the total academic staff consisted of four Professors and three demonstrators.
The College examinations and degrees were still managed by the University of London, annual grants from the Treasury were inadequate, winners of State Scholarships were debarred from coming to Nottingham, and basic raw materials for research had to be made or were donated by the Chemical Industry.
In the 57 years since University status was awarded, Chemistry at Nottingham has moved from humble origins to arguably one of the top Chemistry Schools in the UK with respect to the quality of its teaching and research.

The laying of the foundation stone of Nottingham's new civic college in September 1877 was marked by a supporting speech from the former prime minister, W E Gladstone.
Nottingham University College was formally opened in June 1881 by Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany.
Its 623 evening students were often in employment and looked to the College for training in scientific and technical skills.

 AAS Biographical Memoirs - Denis Oswald Jordan 1914-1982
In 1948, University College Nottingham was granted a Royal Charter to become the University of Nottingham and Jordan was awarded a Commonwealth Fund Fellowship to study for a year at Princeton University.
M.I. Bruce, from Bristol University, was appointed to the second chair in 1977 and was subsequently appointed to the Angas chair in 1982.
She holds a Ph.D. in physiology from the University of Western Australia and is at present Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Human Biology at the West Australian Institute of Technology.

At the age of sixteen he obtained a place as a junior clerk with the firm J.H. Haywood Ltd in Nottingham.
In the fall of 1901 William died suddenly in London of erysipelas and shortly after the funeral, Lawrence became extremely ill with pneumonia.

The work carried out during 1937 and 1938 resulted in the award of an MSc degree from the University of London, and Jordan was in 1939 appointed to the position of Assistant Lecturer in Applied Chemistry at University College Nottingham, which was at that time affiliated with the University of London.
Jordan's first years at University College Nottingham were involved with the teaching of physical chemistry, the main emphasis being in the areas of theoretical chemistry, molecular structure, reaction kinetics, the chemistry of macromolecules, and colloid and surface chemistry.
Within the university, he was prominent as chairman of a large number of permanent committees and working parties.
