Cape Breton University (CBU), formerly the "University College of Cape Breton" (UCCB), is a Canadian university in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, near Sydney, Nova Scotia.
UCCB united diverse education streams such as the liberal arts and sciences with technological diplomas and trades.
On September 23, 2004 the university's board of governors voted unanimously to rename the institution "Breton University", however the proposed name received stiff opposition from a number of groups in the institution and local community over the removal of the word "Cape" from the new name.

The University College of Cape Breton, SYDNEY, NS, was founded in 1974 by the amalgamation of the Sydney campus (Xavier Junior College) of ST FRANCIS XAVIER UNIVERSITY (established 1951) with the Nova Scotia Eastern Institute of Technology (founded 1968).
UCCB was the first university college in Canada; it offered the liberal arts and sciences disciplines of most universities alongside the technological and trades traditions featured at colleges.

The staff at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College were given the task of developing a degree in science which was interdisciplinary and did not duplicate degrees offered at Memorial University.
The justification for using this experiment was explained through "technique introduction and relating organic chemistry concepts to life therefore enhancing the students interest." Dr. Dust illustrated that using simple methodology could provide a result that was scientifically correct and at a recovery level acceptable in a student laboratory as compared to other practical recovery techniques.
