The purpose of the ordinance is to protect the citizens of University Heights from violence arising from handguns and other firearms by keeping firearms out of the hands of unfit persons, that is, those ineligible to receive a Restricted Weapons Owner's Identification Card.
In the University Heights ordinance the penalty set forth is "not more than one thousand dollars ($1,000) or imprisoned not more than one (1) year, or both.

In an effort to encourage home ownership in the University Heights neighborhood surrounding the South Campus, UB is helping its employees purchase and renovate homes in the area.
Employees also may refinance existing mortgages of homes in University Heights to cover renovation under the program, which is being administered by UB's University Community Initiative (UCI), a unit of the Office of Public Service and Urban Affairs.
The Home Loan Guaranty Program is an effort to show that the university is, indeed, committed to maintaining a strong, vibrant University Heights neighborhood, UB officials say.
