Since 1975 the colleges which now form Dublin Institute of Technology had their degrees conferred by the University of Dublin, this situation continued until 1998 and a merger was considered by the institute, but never seriously by the university.
The University of Dublin of which Trinity is the sole constituent college claims sisterhood with Oxbridge although for British students Trinity has traditionally been the destination for high-minded applicants who failed to gain entrance to the two most prestigious British universities.
The college Drama society Dublin University Players is also one of the largest societies in Trinity, and one of the most prolific in Ireland, hosting up to 50 shows and events a year in its own theatre in the Samuel Beckett Centre.

The society was briefly expelled from the College in 1794, but readmitted on the condition that "No question of modern politics shall be debated".
The Society continued successfully after that with many lively debates, including the motion on June 10, 1857 'That the Reform Bill of Lord Grey was not framed in accordance with the wants of the country', proposed by Isaac Butt and opposed by Edward Gibson.
The Society's Bicentennial Meeting in 1970 was addressed by US Senator Edward Kennedy at which he called the Society "The greatest of the schools of the orators".

8.At a meeting of the Society a majority shall be binding unless provided; in the case of an equality of votes the Chairman shall have the casting vote in addition to his personal vote.
10.The Laws of the Society shall not be amended to nor altered, except at a general meeting by motion on notice, and after the first reading, such alteration, until the division on its second reading, shall have precedence over all motions and resolutions requiring notice, and shall become absolute on the second reading.
One member of the Society may furthermore be appointed to the office of Associate Member of Council, which shall be held as an honorary office, at the discretion of the President.

He is chiefly remembered for his support of the American colonies in the struggle against King George III that led to the American Revolution, as well as for his strong opposition to the French Revolution.
Born in Dublin, Ireland, Burke was the son of a Protestant solicitor and a Catholic mother, whose maiden name was Nagle.
After being rejected for membership of the University Philosophical Society, he set up the Debating Club, which later became part of the College Historical Society at Trinity.

The resolution I'll be debating: “This house believes that George W. Bush is a danger to world stability.” The members of the Phil presumably came to me because they could find no one in Europe willing to publicly dispute this widely accepted notion.

He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and lived there from 1661 till 1696, during which time he produced the bulk of his work in mathematics; in 1696 he was appointed to a valuable Government office, and moved to London, where he resided till his death.

I know it is a great privilege to be invited to be an honorary patron of such a distinguished debating society and I am glad it proved possible to organize a visit to Dublin.
I also mean policies that some of us can take for granted: the respect of law, property rights, effective, well-functioning public institutions, an economic environment that fosters competition and enterprise and enables actors to participate in the global economy.
Citizens and economic actors in many parts of the world live in societies where property rights are ignored, public institutions are corrupt or poorly-functioning and where competition and the rule of law are alien concepts.

I went to hear Senator John McCain speak at Trinity College Dublin as a guest of the University Philosophical Society.
Cain easily filling the Ed Burke lecture theatre (the largest in Trinity) but unfortunately his prewritten introductory speech was fairly dry, I don't imagine he had the opportunity to rehearse it much.
Although not entirely his fault I admit I was falling asleep during this part of his address (I had run straight from a Trampolining session and hadn't eaten in hours) but things got much better when it came to questions and answers from an interviewer and the audience.

The university's Philosophical Society had planned to have Ms Nolin (32) address the society this month.
The protests were described as "kind of pathetic" by society honorary secretary Pat Cosgrave who claimed some objectors saw Trinity as a bastion of intellectual brilliance.
