University Slough - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
University Slough (Drainage Canal) beside the Union Bay Natural Area (UBNA) is more accurately one of three areas of open water connected with Lake Washington around Union Bay Marsh, on the east of the main campus of the University of Washington (UW), in Seattle.
Before the lowering of Lake Washington during the early part of the 20th century, Ravenna and Yesler Creeks flowed into marshland north of where University Slough now terminates, and the land through which the slough would be cut lay under the waters of Union Bay.
Construction was completed in 2006 on a project that reconnects partially daylighted Ravenna Creek to Union Bay by piping it underground to University Slough, thus converting the lower reach from a stagnant drainage channel to the outlet for one of Seattle's urban creeks.

The Role of Flow in the Everglades Landscape   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Though the historical documentation of the ridge and slough landscape is limited, there is a strong similarity between the original direction of flow, alignment of ridge and sloughs, and tree-island orientation (SCT 1997).
Loss of ridge and slough landscape is defined by the Science Coordination Team (2003) as a loss of elevation difference between ridge height and slough depths resulting in a flattening of the landscape and a loss of distinct ridge and slough vegetation growth aligning with flow direction.
It is undeniable that the ridge and slough landscape is disappearing and though causes of these changes are not known definitively, initial evidence points to direction, speed, and rate of flow as having large effects on parallel ridges, sloughs, and tree islands (NRC 2003).
