Taiwan's culture is a blend of its distinctive Chinese, Japanese, and Western influences.
Taiwan is the United States' ninth-largest trading partner; Taiwan's two-way trade with the United States amounted to $57 billion in 2005 and rose 7.6% to $62 billion in 2006.
Taiwan's armed forces were reduced as part of a reform initiative from 1997 to 2001, going from about 450,000 to 385,000, with further reductions since then bringing the total force level down to just under 300,000.

Since Japan ruled Taiwan at the time of the takeover, their claims are necessarily based on the assumption that because the dynasties controlled Taiwan before 1895, they have a right to control it now.
Taiwan's sizeable population in 1875 consisted mostly of refugees and their descendants, although there were surely some economic opportunists who had managed to elude the emigration ban.
The killing in Taiwan, of course, is relatively insignificant compared with the starvation on the mainland due to Mao's industrialization attempts and the uncountable murders during the cultural revolution.

It was in part to re-emphasize the US insistence on resolving the Taiwan Strait issue peacefully that President Clinton sent two carrier battle groups to the Taiwan area in March of 1996, and that both Houses of Congress reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to the TRA in July of this year.
Taiwan's democracy, the emergence of which the United States strongly supported, contributes to peace and stability.

On Mar. 26, Hsu shocked Taiwan by publishing a letter in a Taipei newspaper criticizing Chen and warning that any Taiwanese quest for independence was a recipe for disaster.
Taiwan's army is roughly on a par with China's, and the U.S. has vowed to intervene in the event of a conflict.
