The University of Alaska Fairbanks is the flagship institution of the University of Alaska System, and is abbreviated as UAF.
The University of Alaska was established in 1917 as a college, but its origins lie in the creation in 1906 of a federal Agricultural Experiment Station in Fairbanks, the sixth in Alaska.
As the university began to expand throughout the state, the Fairbanks campus became known as the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1975; the two other primary UA institutions are the University of Alaska Anchorage and the University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau.

Recently University of Alaska System administrators have sought to address the "brain drain" caused by the loss of students attending colleges outside the state by offering in-state scholarships to retain some of these students.
The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), a Doctoral II institution, is the primary research institution in the state and serves over 9,000 students across its main campus and at extended sites in rural Alaska.
Although the Alaska Native population was 15 percent in 1995, four of the respondents reported that 40 percent or more of their students were Alaska Native.

Saturday AM ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Alaskans are feeling better about the University of Alaska system, but people in Southcentral are less likely to feel positively than those in other regions, reports a new survey released by University President Mark Hamilton.
Four out of five Alaskans believe the University of Alaska is very important to the state, and nine out of 10 parents of school-age children said they would encourage their children to attend UA.
Half of all Alaska residents believe funding for the university system should increase, according to the survey, while 4 percent said it should decrease.
