The university of Bochum was one of the first to have Bachelor and Master degrees instead of the traditional German Diplom and Magister degree.
Ruhr University is financed and administered by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, where it is the only university housing medicine, engineering, humanities, social sciences, theologies, and science at the same time.
The former prime minister of the State Saxony, Kurt Biedenkopf, was director of the university from 1967 to 1969.

University of Minnesota, Morris Professor of Psychology Eric Klinger has been awarded the Henry A. Murray Award for distinguished contributions to the study of lives.
Klinger was a Fulbright Senior Scholar at the Ruhr University of Bochum, Germany, in 1975-76, and a visiting professor there during 1983-84 and at the University of Konstanz, Germany, in 1995.
He received the University of Minnesota Horace T. Morse Amoco Award for contributions to undergraduate education in 1972, and was named a member of the Academy of Distinguished Teachers, University of Minnesota, an honor he still holds.

Welcome to the homepage of the geophysics section of the Institute of Geology, Mineralogy, and Geophysics at the Ruhr-University Bochum.
Many of the individual research projects are part of the collaborative research centre (SFB 526) "Rheology of the Earth - from the upper crust to the subduction zone", which is an interdisciplinary scientific programme supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and involving different departments of the Ruhr-University Bochum.
The current seismological research involves a field experiment in the southern Aegean Sea named EGELADOS as an acronym for Exploring the GEodynamics of subducted Lithosphere using an Amphibian Deployment of Seismographs.
