Merced County's farms, known for their dairy products, poultry and almonds, produced $1.9 billion in 2003 – a year when the county's unemployment stubbornly hovered around 14 percent, the fourth highest jobless rate in the country, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

In 1998, important steps were taken in the planning process with the Merced County Board of Supervisors, and UC, the County of Merced, the Virginia and Cyril Smith Trusts, the City of Merced and the Merced Irrigation District initiated a collaborative concept-planning process for the University Community.
The concepts developed jointly by the community and the university formed the basis for two separate planning efforts that have proceeded in parallel and have culminated in the preparation of the campus Long Range Development Plan and the county University Community Plan.
Each of these plans is accompanied by an Environmental Impact Report (EIR), prepared in accordance with California law, and each is scheduled for approval in November 2001-the LRDP by The Regents of the University of California and the University Community Plan by the Merced County Board of Supervisors.
