In 1819, Cincinnati College and the Medical College of Ohio were founded in Cincinnati upon the suggestion and with the funds of local benefactors such as Dr. Drake and William Lytle of the Lytle family of Cincinnati.
University of Cincinnati became a "municipally-sponsored, state-affiliated" institution in 1968.
Cincinnati's oldest football rivalry, begun in 1888, this rivalry is with Miami University and symbolized by a Victory Bell awarded to the winner each year.

The University Hospital was one of a select number of Level I trauma centers chosen to participate in a trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of PolyHeme(r), an oxygen-carrying blood substitute, in increasing survival of critically injured and bleeding patients.
University of Cincinnati surgeon, Joseph Buell, M.D. performed three radically new surgeries at Health Alliance hospitals, all of which were performed laparoscopically, which means the surgeon makes only a few small incisions into the patient's abdomen rather than the long incisions called for in conventional surgery methods.
At University Hospital, Dr. Buell performed a laparoscopic cyst gastrotomy; which is a draining of the pancreas into the stomach and a laparoscopic trisegment of the liver, which required removing 3/4 of the liver due to the growth of four large benign tumors in the liver.
