This theory has been propounded in many forms, but the central idea is that the universe of individuals consists of the involuntary outpourings of the ultimate divine essence.
The pro-cess of evolution from the indeterminate to the determinate isoften expressed as a progress from the universal to the particular. Thus the primordial matter assumed b~ the early Greek physicistsmay be said to be the universal substance out of which particularthings arise.
The universal is, as Herbert Spencerremarked, a subjective idea, and the general forms, existingante res, which play so prominent a part in Greek and medieval philosophy, do not in the least correspond to the homogeneousmatter of the physical evolutionists.

We can truly say that modern Coimbra was born in 1537 and was generated by this coming of the university: but it is not less true that the town had a special disposition to receive it.
Curiously, their participation in the university´s government was severely weakened (or even annuled) when, in 1654, they were deprived of the only real influence they had: the right to vote in the appointment of lecturers.
