Textbooks on finite element methods are still few in number, even though new ones are being published, and the method still lacks a full citizenship in university courses, both at undergraduate and graduate levels.
This implies that, after having studied the book, the reader needs some time to develop his or her first working FEM code and, most often, this time is too long with respect to that allocated to finite elements in University courses on numerical methods, or time available to practitioners.
This book is dedicated to P.P. Silvester, to whose teachings and expertise is due a great portion of the growth of the scientific activity in the field of numerical analysis at the University of Florence in the past few years.
