Gorgan (گرگان); Hyrcania ; Hyrcana (Old Persian Varkâna, 'land of wolves'; modern Persian Gorgan, formerly called Astrabad or Asterabad): part of the ancient Persian empire, on the southern shores of the Caspian Sea (present day Golestan, Mazandaran, Gilan and parts of Turkmenistan).
Gorgan and in general Golestan province has a world famous carpet and rug industry.Made by Turkmans, is inherited from the ancient Persian city of Boxârâ (Buchara).Jajim carpets are the exclusives of this province.
The wide Dasht-e Gorgan (the Plain of Gorgan), lies southeast of the Caspian Sea, bounded by the Caspian Sea in the west, high mountain ranges in the south and east, and the Iran-Turkmenistan border on the north.

Jasbi, who is the chancellor of the Islamic Azad University, said that with state support 350 colleges could be established in four years, and with the elimination of entrance exams 140,000 people would be admitted annually and this would create about 40,000 jobs.
The rise in the number of female university students, furthermore, often is cited as evidence of the improvement in women's status in Iran.

CAL STATE L.A. Channa Gilan is a Cal State L.A. biology graduate student in the CEA-CREST program who received her B.S. in Human Biology at the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay.
Cal State L.A. has recruited Native American men and women from universities including New Mexico State University, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, and University of Alaska-Fairbanks, as graduate students in the University's National Science Foundation-funded Center for Environmental Analysis, the first program of its kind funded by NSF on the West Coast.
"Cal State L.A. is the perfect locale for this project, because of its proximity to various natural and urban habitats such as the Santa Monica mountains, the ocean and deserts," said Dr. Carlos Robles, Cal State L.A. professor of biology and director of the program.

In 1990, a seven-plus degree earthquake hit another Caspian province, Gilan, neighboring Mazandaran province, as well as the northwestern province of Zanjan during which thousands of people in the two provinces died.
The Seismography Center at Tehran University's Geophysics Institute said the epicenter of the tremor was located north west of Poledokhtar.

The director of Gilan Province's agricultural organization, Esmail Negaresh, announced on 25 July that the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) granted $400,000 worth of irrigation equipment to the province.
Khatami was accompanied by several of his ministers or their deputies, and they visited other cities in the province, such as Kabutar-Ahang and Razan.
An Iranian Foreign Ministry official said Turkish forces intended to attack the border region of Qotur in West Azerbaijan Province but were repelled by the Law Enforcement Forces, IRNA reported on 23 July.

 Quakes jolt Iranian cities of Roudbar and Damavand
An earthquake measuring 3.7 degrees on the open-ended Richter scale shook the city of Roudbar in the northern province of Gilan early Tuesday, IRNA reported from Tehran.
The seismological base of the Geophysics Institute, affiliated to Tehran University, said the tremor with its epicenter 10 km north of Roudbar, occurred at 02:12 hours local time (2242 GMT on Monday).
Meanwhile, another earthquake, measuring 3.5 degrees on the Richter scale jolted south of Damavand and Firouzkouh cities in Tehran province on Monday.
