The Arboretum was begun in 1991 as a joint project of the University of Kentucky and Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government.
University faculty and students collected seed of plants from the seven physiographic areas of Kentucky, grew the plants from seed to landscape size, and then with the help of UK Grounds and Maintenance planted the two-mile trail.
The UKREC Botanical Gardens are the grounds of the University of Kentucky Research and Education Center.

In 1908, the University of Minnesota purchased 80 acres near Victoria, Minnesota, to establish its Fruit Breeding Farm, best known for its efforts to develop hardy apple trees for very cold climates.
Since its dedication in 1958, the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum (MLA) has maintained three major research goals: Introduce new plants to the area through a broad testing program; serve as an outdoor laboratory for students of horticulture; and provide a laboratory for the development of new landscape plants through a breeding program.

The Lexington Arboretum, otherwise known as the "Official State Botanical Garden for the Commonwealth of Kentucky", is finding itself at the centre of a debate over whether it is appropriate for athletes to use it as a training ground.
Arboretum supporters and scholars who use it for research are protesting that the botanic garden is not suitable as a training and practice facility for organized sports.
Under the amended agreement, a 50-acre portion of Arboretum property must be devoted exclusively to "passive recreation and open space purposes." Athletic fields, swimming pools, tennis courts, "or similar athletic and recreational facilities" are not to be constructed there.
